Onteora Moutain House | Hudson Valley

The summer home of Richard Hellmann, the mayonnaise mogul, sits on a promontory overlooking the Esopus Valley. It is surrounded by 250 acres of forest preserve. The centerpiece of the house is a 20 by 40 foot great room with a cathedral ceiling, massive stone fireplace, and a picture window to capture the view down the valley. Around the great room wraps the 60 foot dining porch. The downstairs features a grotto-likegame room with a championship pool table. Other amenities include a sauna, a koi pond, and meandering trails around the grounds. 

종종 Bed Bath & Beyond와 헷갈리는 Bed & Breakfast 라는 (사실 둘다 B&B라는) 곳에 갔다. 여관에서부터 호텔까지 다양한 숙박형태가 있지만, 그걸 구분짓는 정확한 기준에 대해선 모호하다.  B&B는 아침을 주는 민박, 혹은 취사가 가능하지 않은 펜션이라고 봐야 하는건지, 어쨌든 Mt. Tremper에 위치한 Onteora Mountain House 는 말그대로 하자면 산장이 아닐까 싶다.

이곳에 가서 안 사실 중에 하나가 이 집이 원래 마요네즈계의 거물 Richard Hellmann을 위해 1928년에 지어졌다는 사실이었다. Hellmann이 50대일때 의사가 6개월의 시한부를 선고하면서 은퇴를 하고 전원에 가서 살면 좀더 오래 살 수 있을거라고 충고하여 여기에 집을 짓고 살기 시작했다고 한다. 이 집 덕분인지, 의사의 예상이 틀린 건지 94세까지 살았다고 한다. 원래 주인이 하나였던 은퇴 후의 집이라서 공용공간이 꽤 넓어서 B&B로 사용되어지는 지금도 부족함이 없어보인다.
