The High Line is located on Manhattan's West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. Section 1 of the High Line, which opened to the public on June 9, 2009, runs from Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street. Section 2, between West 20th and West 30th Streets, opened June 8, 2011.

요즘 뉴욕에서 가장 각광을 받고 있는 하이라인의 두번째 단계가 최근 오픈했다. 기존의 철도를 재활용한 것처럼 보이게 만든 공원이긴 하지만 고가 철도 구조물 빼고는 완전히 다 걷어내고 새롭게 만든 것이고 막대한 공사비가 들었다. 처음 두 단계에서만 일억오천이백만불이 들었고, 그 중 사천사백만불은 민간과 기업으로부터 조성되었다. 적지 않은 유지 비용은 시와 지역상권으로부터 걷어들인 세금으로 유지되고 있다.

미국에서 보통의 좋은 거리를 만드는데 1 foot 당 700불 정도가 들지만 하이라인 같은 경우엔 3만불의 비용이 든 탓의 논란이 되고 있지만, 뉴욕 도시 개발 계획국에 따르면 2억불 가량의 새로운 경제창출효과를 만들어 냈다고 한다. 이천오백 이상의 가구와 천개 이상의 호텔룸,  그리고 오십만 sqf의 사무공간과 갤러리가 새로 늘어났다.

사실 첼시 지역이 갤러리로 각광을 받고 있었지만, 낙후된 주별 시설 때문의 부가적인 효과에 있어서 어느 정도 한계가 있었는데, 하이라인과 함께 새로 지어진 여러 프로젝트들 덕분에 뉴욕에서 가장 뜨고 있는 지역이 되었다.

요즘 점심을 먹고, 카메라를 들고 타임스퀘어를 나가는게 일이 되었다. "당신의 취미는 무엇인가요 ?" 문득 든 생각인데, 요즘은 저런 질문을 별로 하지도 받지도 않는다. 그냥 "무슨 일을 하세요?" 혹은 "뭘 전공하셨나요?" 이런 식의 질문이다.어느 순간부터 나의 취미를 잃어버린게 아닐까라는 생각이 갑자기 들었다.
사실 하루종일 답답하게 사무실에 앉아 있다 퇴근하면 집에 가서 TV를 보거나, 분위기 전환 정도의 외식, 그리고 여기선 정말 드문 일이지만 가끔씩 있는 술자리 이런게 전부가 아닌가 싶기도 하다.
취미를 갖기엔 내가 하는 일에 소흘해지지 않을까, 시간이 부족하지 않을까, 내일 회사에 가서 피곤하지 않을까 하는 이런 저런 걱정들만 가득하고 막상 움직이기엔 귀찮음에 게으름만 피우고 있는거 같다.
쌓여져 있는 일들을 보면 해야할 것들이 가득하지만, 그래도 뭔가 새로운 일을 해보는게 더 활기차지 않을까라는 나의 게으름에 대한 변명을 해본다.

Chelsea Market is an enclosed urban food court, shopping mall, office building and television production facility located in the Chelsea neighborhood of the borough of Manhattan, in New York City. Built in the former National Biscuit Company factory complex where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced, the 22-building complex fills two entire blocks bounded by Ninth and Eleventh Avenues and 15th and 16th Streets, with a connecting bridge over Tenth Avenue. In addition to the retail concourse in the structure east of 10th Avenue, it also provides standard office space for tenants, including media and broadcasting companies such as Oxygen Network, Food Network, Mr Youth, MLB.com, EMI Music Publishing and the local New York City cable station NY1. Also, more recently, Google has moved into some of the second and fourth floors.

Retail facilities were introduced into the building by connecting the original back lots of individual buildings to a central, ground-level concourse with entries at 9th and 10th Avenues (completed in April 1997). Anchor stores include the Chelsea Market Baskets, Manhattan Fruit Exchange, 202 by Nicole Farhi, Amy's Bread, and a restaurant, called Buddakan. There is also the Fat Witch Bakery, Ruth's Bakery, Eleni's Bakery, The Lobster Place, Frank's Meat, and Chelsea Thai.

In January 2006 on the 10th Avenue side, Morimoto, owned by Food Network "Iron Chef" Masaharu Morimoto and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando opened. Opposite Morimoto across 10th Avenue, also in the Chelsea Market complex is Del Posto, an Italian restaurant owned by fellow "Iron Chef", Mario Batali. The Food Network films its shows Iron Chef America and Emeril Live in the Chelsea Market.

The developers of Chelsea Market have encouraged a symbiotic relationship among their tenants with the vendors supplying the restaurateurs with fresh ingredients, such as seafood, vegetables, fruit and meats. The presence of television companies in the same building also brings media attention to the site and the businesses that are found there. The site also allows businesses to combine their manufacturing and retail assets under one roof.

Ground Zero

Thanksgiving Day 다음 날인 Black Friday 풍경이다. 아직 공사가 한창인 Ground Zero와 연못에 평화롭게 먹이를 주는 여자, 그리고 수많은 쇼핑객으로 가득찬 Century 21이 꽤나 대조적으로 뉴욕의 다운타운을 보여주고 있다.

Feast of San Gennaro in New York's Historic Little Italy

The 82nd Annual Feast of San Gennaro, the oldest, biggest and best known Italian festival in the United States, will begin on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010. 

The beloved Feast of San Gennaro is an annual celebration of the Patron Saint of Naples. The first Feast in New York City took place on September 19, 1926 when newly arrived immigrants from Naples settled along Mulberry Street in the Little Italy section of New York City and decided to continue the tradition they had followed in Italy to celebrate the day in 305 A.D. when Saint Gennaro was martyred for the faith. 

Since then, the Feast has grown from a one-day street festival to a gala 11-day event. On September 19th during each Feast, a Religious Procession, including the Statue of San Gennaro, winds along the length of Mulberry and Mott Streets, between Canal and Houston Streets. The procession begins immediately following a Celebratory Mass held at the Most Precious Blood Church on Mulberry Street, the National Shrine of San Gennaro.

Nolita is bounded on the north by Houston Street, on the east by the Bowery, on the south roughly by Broome Street, and on the west by Lafayette Street. It lies east of SoHo, south of NoHo, west of the Lower East Side, and north of Little Italy and Chinatown.
